If there are nearly 10,000 Ukrainian refugees in Transnistria and only 76 registered, why have not the UNHCR, Red Cross and others set up an office or mobile visits to register them there and offer food and supplies as they do refugees in Moldova, since technically it is part of Moldova. irrespective of the technicality these agencies should be there !
For that number of refugees, and knowing the difficult economic status of Transnistrians, these relief organizations should be actively helping these refugees, especially the ones with disabilities.
I would hope these reporters we continue this story by asking the agencies why they are not there.
A good question. I don't have in-depth details on this (and this story was written by Journo Birds) but I can clarify a few points:
1) We don't know what the Transnistrian registration system is or really what benefits it might entail. But we do know that the UNHCR cannot help refugees navigate the Transnistrian registration system / bureaucracy without defacto recognizing Transnistria
2) Ukrainians in Transnistria can register for support from international agencies in Chisinau controlled territory
3) The UNHCR has not at any point provided "food and supplies" during this refugee crisis in Moldova. Books could be written about their failings on this point. But they have provided cash support in the form of pre-paid bank cards (which was very slow to start but very impactful when it did).
Another very helpful report from Journo Birds! Thanks, David!
